Centennial Primary Sector Secondary Teacher Training Scholarship Application

Outcome is advised by 31st October 2026. The scholarship will either be paid in two equal instalments in August and February if the awardee completes the Graduate Diploma in one year, or four equal instalments in August, February, August and February if the Graduate Diploma is completed over two years.

 

Training Scholarship Criteria and Conditions

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • have completed, or be in the final semester of, a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, agribusiness, or animal science.  Applicants who are able to demonstrate a passion for the primary sectors may also be considered

  • have been selected to study the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching (Secondary) in the year of award

  • be intending to pursue a career as a high school teacher in New Zealand following graduation.

Preference will be given to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.  However, international students who can demonstrate a desire to pursue a teaching career in horticulture, agriculture, agribusiness or animal science in New Zealand will also be considered.

Selection Criteria

Selection will be based on: 

  • academic merit, applicants are expected to have achieved a minimum B grade average in tertiary study completed to date

  • the applicant’s alignment with the intent of the scholarship and the purpose of the C Alma Baker Charitable Trust.

  • demonstrated experience with, and passion for, the New Zealand primary sector

  • three referee reports, with one commenting on the applicant’s passion for the New Zealand primary sector, one on the applicant’s academic ability and one on the applicant’s commitment to teaching.

Selection Committee

The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Trustees of the C Alma Baker Charitable Trust.

A panel consisting of a C Alma Baker Trust Ltd Director, the Dean of Agriculture at Massey University and a representative of the Horticulture and Agriculture Teachers Association (HATA), nominated by the Head of the School of Agriculture and Environment at Massey University, will review the applications and present a shortlist of up to 5 suitable candidates for the Trustees consideration.

Conditions of the Scholarship

The C Alma Baker Charitable Trust Trustees reserve the right to not award the scholarship in the event of there being no suitable applicants, and their decision is final.

The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships, bursaries, and awards providing the other scholarships, bursaries and awards permit co-tenure.
